FUD Student Develops AI-Powered Fire Detection System

A final-year Physics student of the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Daha Muhammad Albakari, has developed an Artificial Intelligence-powered fire detection and prevention system known as AI FIRE SYSTEM.

The system combines computer vision, embedded AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and environmental sensors to detect fire and smoke at an early stage. Unlike conventional fire alarms that mainly depend on smoke or heat sensors, the system analyses visual and environmental data in real time to identify potential fire hazards and reduce false alarms.

According to Albakari, the system uses an ESP32-CAM to capture images, while sensors monitor temperature and gas levels. An embedded AI model then determines whether the environment is normal or indicates smoke or fire, assesses the level of risk, and triggers alarms or sends alerts through Wi-Fi or GSM when necessary.
He said the innovation was developed to provide an affordable and locally produced fire safety solution for homes, schools, hospitals, markets, hotels, factories, fuel stations and other high-risk environments.
