Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as a timely and impactful initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burden on students across the nation.
The governor expressed his commendation on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the National Executive Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by National President Comrade Olusola Ladoja, at the Government House in Dutse.
The NANS leadership was in Jigawa State to conduct their association’s Northwest zonal elections, which include the northwestern states of Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Kebbi.
In a statement by Governor’s spokesperson, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the governor appreciated the association’s decision to host the elections in Jigawa and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting NANS activities and student-focused initiatives.
Governor Namadi noted that the student loan initiative reflects President Tinubu’s dedication to education and student welfare. He highlighted the challenges students face due to rising school fees, stating that the Jigawa State Government has invested nearly seven hundred million naira to assist indigent students as part of its broader human capital development agenda.
“I recall when school fees increased, many students struggled to pay, with some forced to drop out, which is unacceptable. The student loan scheme introduced by President Tinubu demonstrates his concern for youth education in Nigeria,” he said.
He also commended the NANS leadership for promoting dialogue, unity, and constructive engagement among students, urging them to uphold accountability, transparency, and responsible leadership as future leaders.
“I am pleased that the NANS president and the entire leadership recognize that dialogue and communication are the way forward. As future leaders, we must resolve differences at the negotiation table rather than through conflict,” he added.
Responding, NANS National President Comrade Olusola Ladoja praised both federal and state governments for their student-focused policies, calling the student loan scheme a groundbreaking initiative that signifies a new era of responsive leadership that prioritizes the interests of Nigerian students.
“Since the onset of democracy in Nigeria, this is the first time students have felt genuinely supported by the presidency. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the first leader to provide loans to assist Nigerian students in their educational pursuits,” he remarked.
The NANS leadership also expressed gratitude to the Jigawa State Government for fostering a peaceful and conducive environment that ensured the successful conduct of their zonal elections, reaffirming their commitment to ongoing collaboration with the state.
