Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has affirmed that Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II will remain the Emir of Kano, dismissing rumors of his potential removal following Governor’s defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
In an exclusive interview to Weekend Trust through his spokesman, Sanusi Bature, the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, the governor stated, “There is absolutely no plan or agreement to remove Emir Sanusi.” He emphasized that Sanusi’s appointment was conducted under the repealed emirates law, asserting, “This defection will not alter his status.”
The governor criticized the rumors as unfounded, describing them as the work of individuals who do not have Kano’s best interests at heart. He called for a clear distinction between political and traditional institutions, highlighting that the traditional institution remains non-partisan.
When questioned about engagements with the Bayero camp or those opposing Sanusi, Bature responded that no outreach had been initiated but emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Kano.
The emirate dispute also has a significant legal aspect. A prominent figure from the Bayero camp, Alhaji Aminu Babba Danagundi, has filed a suit challenging the repeal of the emirate law and Bayero’s removal, which is currently awaiting a Supreme Court decision.
Professor Tijjani Naniya, a historian and Special Adviser to the Governor on the Kano State Emirates Council, stated that political interests must operate within the law, advocating for consultation and consensus among all parties to ensure peace in Kano.
Residents of Kano have expressed mixed reactions to the situation, with some fearing that reversing Sanusi’s reinstatement could reignite tensions. Many believe that Sanusi’s position is safeguarded by the legal framework, while others warn that political dynamics may influence the traditional institution.
As concerns grow over the future of the emirate, many citizens urge respect for the legal process and a focus on stability for the community.
