President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), for being recognized as a champion of press freedom by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI).
Ajayi received a commendation award during the IPI’s Annual Conference held on December 2, 2025, in Abuja.
The IPI praised Ajayi’s commitment to press freedom since his appointment in August 2024, stating, “Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi has demonstrated an unmistakable commitment to press freedom and respect for journalists and media organizations.” The organization emphasized the importance of acknowledging his efforts to inspire others in similar positions.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the President expressed his support for the DSS’s efforts to uphold citizens’ rights and create a more conducive environment for journalists. He called on other security agencies to follow the DSS’s example by fostering partnerships with the media rather than viewing them as adversaries.
The President urged the DSS to continue its vital work in promoting press freedom, highlighting the media’s constitutional role in holding officials accountable.
