The Gombe State Government has taken a significant step towards modernizing livestock farming by signing a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) of New Zealand.
In a statement issued by Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Gombe State Governor, explained that, the collaboration aims to enhance livestock farming, strengthen resilience against climate change, and open new economic opportunities across all sectors related to livestock.
The agreement follows a two-day working visit by a high-level delegation from Gombe State, led by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, to LIC’s modern livestock development facilities in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Under the agreement, both parties will work together on developing data management systems and modern technologies for livestock management, enhancing sustainable operational strategies, and strengthening institutions through training and knowledge exchange.
The MoU also establishes a framework for joint research initiatives, including collaborations with Gombe State University, exploring opportunities in biotechnology and genetic engineering, such as improving dairy and meat breeds based on regulatory approvals.
To ensure effective implementation and meaningful outcomes, a joint task force will be established to oversee activities, develop detailed action plans, and monitor achieved results.
Discussions on the first day focused on optimal animal management systems, sustainable supply chain practices, and long-term adjustments in the sector.
On the second day, the team conducted a working tour of LIC’s modern farm, where the agreement was officially signed.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the partnership as a major advancement in the transformation of agriculture and livestock in Gombe State.
“The lessons we learned from these initiatives have strengthened our resolve to utilize new technologies as a pathway to sustainable development,” the Governor stated.
“This agreement is a crucial step towards enhancing livestock and the resilience of our animals, which will directly benefit herders and bolster the state’s economy. It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent initiative to reform the livestock sector under the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.”
The Gombe delegation received support from the federal government, represented by the Minister of Livestock Development, Hon. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, who emphasized the federal government’s backing for this program.
According to him, the partnership reflects the positive direction of Tinubu’s administration policies.
“This collaboration aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes the adoption of technology, sustainable practices, and the visible impact on the economy,” the Minister said.
“We will continue to support initiatives that go beyond mere policy statements to deliver tangible benefits to farmers and the national economy.”
On behalf of the Livestock Development Corporation, Global Livestock Development Manager Jason Schrier welcomed this partnership, describing it as a global best practice in livestock development.
“We are proud to host the Gombe State delegation and work together to create a new future for livestock farming in Gombe State and Nigeria,” he stated.
“I am pleased that this agreement incorporates LIC’s technical expertise and the strong leadership of Gombe State, along with the Governor’s commitment to reform.”
Governor Inuwa Yahaya was accompanied by senior officials, including the Coordinator of the Livestock and Fisheries Modernization Program (L-PRES), Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, and the Director of Research and Data Collection, Ahmed Husaini.
Global Livestock Development Manager Jason Schrier and Chief Scientist Dr. Lorna McNaughton represented LIC.
Founded in 1909, the LIC is a leader in agricultural technology and livestock improvement globally, supporting farmers worldwide through the use of modern technology, herd management applications, and specialized consultancy.
