Professor Sheikh Abdullahi Saleh Usman says his decision to step down as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) was driven entirely by personal reasons, not pressure, conflict, or policy disagreements.
In a resignation statement released Monday, Usman said the decision followed “deep reflection,” prayer, and consultations with his family. He stressed that the move was made “in good conscience” and with respect for the responsibilities attached to public office.
“I wish to state unequivocally that this decision is taken entirely for personal reasons,” he said, adding that it reflected “no dissatisfaction with the Commission, the government, or the noble mandate we have collectively pursued.”
Usman confirmed that he submitted his resignation formally to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing Section 3(6) of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2006, which governs the appointment and exit of the commission’s leadership.
The former chairman used the statement to express gratitude to President Tinubu for appointing him, describing the role as a privilege. He also acknowledged Vice President Kashim Shettima for what he called consistent guidance and encouragement during his tenure.
He thanked NAHCON board members, management, and staff, praising their professionalism and resilience. He also acknowledged state pilgrims welfare boards, licensed tour operators, airlines, service providers, and Saudi counterparts for their cooperation in Nigeria’s Hajj operations.
Notably, the statement offered no criticism of internal processes, government policy, or external partners. Instead, Usman emphasized that the decision to resign was personal and voluntary, and asked that it not be interpreted otherwise.
His departure nonetheless leaves NAHCON without a substantive head at a time when planning for upcoming Hajj and Umrah activities is ongoing. As of Monday, there was no official announcement from the Presidency or NAHCON on an acting chairman or transition plan.
Usman concluded by offering prayers for Nigeria’s leadership, the incoming NAHCON management, and future pilgrims, asking Allah to grant them a Hajj Mabrur.
