The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has said the state government is working to lead the advocacy for the establishment of a state law on the Freedom of Information, which will replicate the freedom of information act.
He made this known during a two-day retreat for the Kano Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.
Waiya emphasized the significance of the retreat, expressing pride in hosting it as a means to recognize the contributions of online journalists in Kano’s media landscape.
He urged participants to uphold ethical values and professional standards, stressing their role as future leaders in journalism. “You must maintain diligence in news sourcing, accuracy in reporting, and avoid sensationalism,” he stated, highlighting the distinction between online journalism and social media use.
The Commissioner acknowledged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s ongoing support for journalism development, reiterating that digital journalism is a critical pillar in the profession today.
He called for self-improvement and professionalism, noting that successful online journalists have built their reputations through commitment and consistency.
In his remarks, Mustapha Muhammad, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, highlighted the need for a paradigm shift in journalism, prioritizing ethical standards over monetary incentives. He reinforced the essential role of journalists in shaping public discourse.
Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, Chairman of NUJ Kano State Council, praised Waiya for convening the retreat, which aims to enhance ethical practices amidst the rapid transformation of journalism. He acknowledged the support from the Jigawa State Government and highlighted the need for renewed dedication to professionalism and unity within the media.
Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, Chairman of NUJ Jigawa State Council, underscored the crucial responsibilities of journalists in an era of accessible information, calling for accountability and responsible online engagement. He also announced progress in establishing an Online Chapel in Jigawa State and the renovation of their ICT Centre.
The retreat’s theme, “Strengthening Digital Journalism through Ethical Practice and Responsive Online Engagement,” encapsulates the collective goal of fostering a responsible and ethical journalism culture in the digital age. Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, Chairman of the Kano Online Journalists, commended the state government for its support in facilitating the retreat.
