The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Government, organized a significant Ramadan lecture aimed at addressing the growing issue of fake news and hate journalism in society. The event was held at the NUJ Secretariat in Dutse, facilitated through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

In his welcome address, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse emphasized the importance of raising awareness among journalists and the public about the dangers of misinformation and unethical reporting. He expressed gratitude for the support from the state government following their proposal for the lecture, highlighting its critical relevance in today’s media landscape.

“Alhamdulillah, this lecture was organized by the NUJ in collaboration with Jigawa State Government through the SSG’s office. The government recognized the significance of this topic and provided full backing,” stated Comrade Dutse.

The lecture aimed to foster ethical journalism and remind practitioners of their societal responsibilities. Comrade Dutse noted that the theme was expanded based on a recommendation from Islamic scholar Dr. Abubakar Sani Birnin Kudu to reach a broader audience, educating the public on the consequences of sharing unverified information.

Addressing disciplinary measures for journalists engaging in unethical conduct, the NUJ Chairman acknowledged that while their constitution allows for sanctions, the current focus is on awareness and education. “We believe this is a time for education rather than punishment. Raising awareness about the dangers of hate journalism is crucial,” he elaborated.

Malam Hamisu Muhammad Gumel, Chief Press Secretary to the Jigawa State Governor, echoed the government’s commitment to supporting journalists. He recognized the media’s vital role in information dissemination and expressed concern over the adverse effects of unchecked fake news. “The government is worried about the implications of fake news. We encourage the NUJ to strengthen its internal measures to ensure responsible reporting,” he stated.

The challenges posed by social media were also discussed, with Gumel noting the difficulty in controlling online information flow. He urged individuals to be mindful of what they publish or share in accordance with existing laws.

Earlier, the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim reiterated the government’s determination to educate citizens through religious leaders on issues related to fake news, drug abuse, and promoting discipline and peaceful coexistence.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Administration and Finance, SSG’s office, Alhaji Abdullahi Sa’idu, the SSG commended the NUJ leadership for initiating the lectures and assured that the government would continue to provide the necessary support for the sustainability of this initiative, ensuring it occurs annually.

The SSG cautioned journalists and media practitioners to maintain fairness and objectivity in their reporting for the development of the country and Jigawa State.

Delivering the main lecture, Associate Professor Sheikh Abubakar Muhammad Sani Birnin Kudu discussed the pervasive impacts of fake news across political, economic, and religious spheres. He urged religious leaders to take a proactive role in addressing misinformation, stating, “Fake news infiltrates every aspect of our lives. It is essential for religious leaders to guide society in this battle.”

He stressed the importance of adhering to religious teachings on justice, honesty, and the verification of information, especially in a diverse society comprising both Muslims and non-Muslims. He advised attendees, “Any news item that comes your way should be verified as much as possible before dissemination. Verification is key to preventing the negative impacts of fake news.”

The lecture attracted journalists, government officials, religious leaders, and members of the public, including the District Head of Sakwaya and Dan isan Dutse, Alhaji Zaharaddeen Basiru Sanusi. All emphasized the need for continued collaboration to promote responsible journalism and safeguard societal harmony. The event concluded with a shared commitment to combat misinformation and uphold the integrity of media reporting within the community.
