As part of its efforts to deepen industrialization and expand renewable energy infrastructure, the Jigawa State Government has signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Tesni Energy Nigeria Limited and Leda GreenPower Energy Engineering Company of Beijing. This collaboration will establish a 100-megawatt annual solar panel assembly factory in the state.
Malam Hamisu Muhammad Gumel, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Jigawa State, announced the signing today at the Government House in Dutse, attended by members of the State Executive Council and representatives from the partnering companies.
During the ceremony, Governor Malam Umar Namadi emphasized the project’s significance in the state’s long-term development strategy. He stated that the solar panel assembly factory would fulfill both commercial and strategic purposes.
“This plant will not only produce solar panels but will also act as a feeder for our plan to develop a 100-megawatt solar power generation facility. It will manufacture related components such as solar-powered irrigation pumps and nitrogen-related products,” he explained.
The governor highlighted the project’s economic benefits, including job creation, stimulation of local industries, and attracting further investments. He assured investors of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the agreement.
Engr. Bashir Ishak, Team Lead of Tesni/Leda GreenPower Company, described the agreement as historic, marking it as the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria and among the first in the country in terms of technology. He noted that the plant would produce up to 100 megawatts of solar panels annually, positioning Jigawa State as the first location in Nigeria for locally produced solar panels.
Feasibility studies and Environmental Impact Assessments have been completed, with the factory expected to significantly reduce the cost of solar power deployment. “Producing one megawatt of solar power typically costs around one million dollars. However, with this assembly plant, production costs are expected to drop by 50 to 60 percent,” he said.
The project, valued at over five million dollars, will operate as a joint venture between GreenPower Energy Engineering Company and Tesni Energy Nigeria Limited. The plant will feature a semi-automatic production facility, combining automated processes with manual components to create job opportunities for the youth of Jigawa State.
Engr. Surajo Musa, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, stated that the project aligns with ongoing federal power sector reforms, enabling states to participate directly in electricity generation. He pointed out that Jigawa State’s high solar irradiation levels make it highly suitable for solar energy development, making this initiative timely and strategic.
“This assembly plant will not only lower production costs but also create employment opportunities and facilitate technology transfer. The technology for producing solar PV panels will now be available in Jigawa State, providing specialized technical expertise to those involved in the production process,” he added.
